Effective June 1, 2008, Dr. Rainer Hauenschild was appointed CEO of the Business Unit Energy Solutions. Since September 2006 Hauenschild served as Chief Operating Officer on the Managing Board of Lurgi AG and was Managing Director of Lurgi GmbH following renaming of the company on January 1, 2008.

After gaining a degree in mechanical engineering majoring in heat, energy and process engineering, and thermodynamics, Rainer Hauenschild obtained his doctorate on heat and material transfer processes in wet cooling towers. Then he started his career at ABB Kraftwerke AG as project manager in the field of R&D, where his duties included responsibility for the performance of feasibility studies for international power plant projects. Hauenschild ended his career at ABB in 2000 as Senior Vice President, Engineering Fossil Fired Steam Power Plants.

Following the integration of ABB Kraftwerke AG into Alstom Power Generation AG, Hauenschild was appointed by Alstom Power Generation AG in Mannheim as Director, Project Management, Power Plants. There, he was responsible for order execution for international turnkey power plant projects until 2003. In September 2003, Hauenschild joined Invensys APV, Crawley, UK, where he assumed responsibility for the execution of plant projects worldwide, focusing on the food and beverages industry as well as in the pharmaceuticals and healthcare sector.

In August 2005, he was appointed Technical Director and assumed global responsibility for technology, R&D, quality, strategic procurement and production management at GEA Energy Technology GmbH in Bochum. There, his work’s focal aspects until September 2006 included the introduction and improvement of business processes.

Rainer Hauenschild is married and has two grownup children. He dedicates his leisure time to recreational sport and other outdoor activities together with his family. He values “open, constructive communication. It is just as much a part of the basic values of a successful company as the declaration of belief in binding, demandable targets.”

Steve Kidd is Director of Strategy & Research at the World Nuclear Association, the international association for nuclear energy based in London.

After a brief period as an economics tutor at Sheffield University, he followed a career as an industrial economist with leading UK companies. These specialized in the raw materials and engineering sectors and included Rio Tinto and Rover Cars. He practiced as an independent consultant from 1990 onwards and then joined the former Uranium Institute as Senior Research Officer in 1995. He assumed his present position when the Institute became the World Nuclear Association in 2001.     

He received his bachelors and masters degrees in economics from Queens’ College, University of Cambridge and was the winner of the Adam Smith Prize. He authors many articles on the commercial aspects of nuclear power, is a frequent speaker at conferences and meetings around the world and is the author of the recent book, “Core Issues – Dissecting Nuclear Power Today”. Finally, he organizes and teaches at training courses for nuclear professionals in developing nuclear countries on behalf of the World Nuclear University.
