European Power Policy – Can our Industry Really Deliver?

The time has come to confront one of the most important, and often avoided, questions facing the power sector. Can the power industry find strategic and technical solutions to achieve the outcomes demanded by energy policies emanating from
Leading power industry professionals, including power generators and suppliers will give an open and frank assessment of the industry’s ability to meet energy and climate goals, challenging them where necessary.
Expect the discussion to include an appraisal of the ability of renewables to replace large amounts of conventional capacity, the prospects for carbon capture and storage, the role of nuclear power and the changing outlook for gas fired power generation. Other key factors that will be considered include the role of electric vehicles, increasing public resistance to new infrastructure, the changes required to the grid network and the impact of the economic climate on financing required investments – including new plant and refurbishments.
The panel is made up of power professionals involved in key decisions in utilities and suppliers and professional advisors. Details of the panel members are detailed below.
| MODERATOR: Stephen Sackur is identified around the world as the presenter of HARDtalk, the flagship current affairs interview programme aired on BBC World and the News Channel. Known for his combative style, his subjects have included the heads of NATO and OPEC, Shimon Peres, Gore Vidal and Richard Dawkins. Stephen previously served in Brussels as the BBC’s Europe Correspondent, reporting on day to day stories from the major European institutions and across the continent. Before that he was Washington Correspondent, where his coverage and analysis of 9/11 won widespread acclaim. He has interviewed Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Ten years earlier it was Sackur who broke the story of the mass killing on the Basra road out of Kuwait, marking the end of the Gulf War. He was then posted to Cairo and Jerusalem as Middle East Correspondent, where he reported on the emergence of the Palestinian Authority. |

He has been member and associate member in the main economic and technical Associations of the Energy Sector, particular in the range of natural gas and water services. He cooperates with Research Centres and he is an important speaker, known in the national and international world, in several Courses, Seminars and Conventions. |
![]() | Magued Eldaief Executive Director Energy Accounts GE Energy UK Magued Eldaief leads key Global accounts and Partner relationships that span a number of GE Energy businesses that include Power & Water, Energy Services & Oil & Gas. In addition to this responsibility he was also named as the Managing Director for GE Energy in the UK. Magued received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the American University in Cairo in 1987 and an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. in 1992. From 1989 to 1994, he held several application and sales assignments in the US before moving to New Delhi in 1994 to lead GE Power Systems' activities in India. In 1998, Magued was named Region Executive & General Manager for the Africa/India/Middle East region, based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In 2001 he moved to London as General Manager- GE Energy Services Europe and in early 2004, he was named as President and Region Executive Asia Pacific for GE Energy based in Singapore. He was named to his present position in June 2006 and is based in London. |
![]() | Paul Browning Prior to his current position, Paul was most recently with Caterpillar Corp., as Managing Director, Caterpillar Motoren, based in Kiel, Germany where he was responsible for a global business in Caterpillar’s Marine & Petroleum Power division. He was previously the Vice President, Turbomachinery Products in Caterpillar’s Solar Turbines division based in San Diego, CA. Under Paul’s leadership, Solar Turbines delivered and introduced the 22MW Titan 250 gas turbine, a new line of mid-stream and upstream centrifugal gas compressors, and a new generation of low NOx combustion products. He previously worked in commercial, manufacturing, and technical roles with Solar Turbines. Paul began his professional career post college as a Research Engineer for eight years at the GE Research Center in Niskayuna, NY, including a role as a Program Manager for GE Power Systems. A native of Livonia, MI, Paul holds a BS degree in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from Carnegie Mellon University and an MS in Materials Engineering from Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute. |

Engineering) has been employed in the energy sector throughout his career and was appointed director for production and commerce when the Elsam power company was founded in 2000. He became the managing director for Elsam Kraft in 2004 and the CEO for Elsam in 2005. In these positions, Niels Bergh-Hansen has led the optimization and streamlining of Elsam’s power stations so they are now among the most efficiently run, most innovative and least polluting in the world. At DONG Energy, Niels Bergh-Hansen is responsible for the Group’s power producing activities including wind and thermal production. |
