Nuclear Power Europe 2010

Nuclear Power Europe 2010 Conference Programme

Day 3 – Thursday 10 June

Session 6: Waste & Decommissioning

Room: NPE

09:00 – 10:30

Every year, the 27 member states of the EU generate an estimated 85 000 m3 of radioactive waste and ever since the industry began to produce nuclear waste, it has been stored temporarily, not buried. But that is set to change. New disposal facilities are currently being built in Sweden, France and Finland. This session focuses on the practical methods of the disposal, decommissioning and remediation of nuclear waste.

Chair: Ton Holthuis, Director Power, Lloyd’s Register Energy, The Netherlands

Co-Chair: Johann Lindner, Director Business Development - Europe, Excel Services Corporation, USA

Radioactive waste management and decommissioning - challenges and prospects from an IAEA perspective

Irena Mele, Section Head, International Atomic Energy Agency, Austria

Modern approach to nuclear waste management

Peter Maher, Head of Technical - Decommissioning Directorate, Sellafield Ltd., UK

Decommissioning & remediation of waste

Sten-Olof Andersson, Senior Vice President, Business Development, Studsvik AB, Sweden

10:30 – 11:00: Coffee Break

Session 7: The Nuclear Steam Cycle

Room: NPE

11:00 – 12:30

Corrosion damage is common in nuclear power plants that employ lower steam temperatures and pressures. For utilities, the uprating of nuclear steam turbines is an inexpensive way to add capacity in small increments. This session features industry-leading case studies concerning the nuclear steam cycle: methods to improve efficiency, cutting-edge design and retrofit technology.

Chair: Ulla Pettersson, Director, e for energy Management Consulting, Sweden

Co-Chair: Giorgio Dodero, Chairman, IPG Industrial Project Group Srl, Italy
