Nuclear Power Europe 2010

SERVING THE NUCLEAR SECTOR

Now in its third year, Nuclear Power Europe offers a comprehensive conference and exhibition for the European nuclear power industry.

Over three days, Nuclear Power Europe will include an insightful and thought provoking conference covering strategic and technical topics chosen and presented by industry practitioners themselves. The conference will look at the benefits of nuclear power within a balanced energy mix.

A key element of Nuclear Power Europe will be to bridge the gap between the past, present  and future of nuclear energy in Europe. With focus on the effects of Fukashima on the nuclear power market and the lessons that can be learned, nuclear power plant safety and emergency planning will high on the agenda. The existing fleet of nuclear power stations will also be at the forefront of proceedings: maintenance, upgrading and life extension opportunities across Europe, as well as decommissioning, waste and other legacy issues will be discussed in detail..

Co-located with POWER-GEN Europe, the continent’s largest event for the electricity and power technology sector, and Renewable Energy World Europe, Nuclear Power Europe offers a dedicated trade show floor, with numerous exhibiting companies displaying state-of-the-art technology, services, software and hardware.

The 2011 event in Milan attracted nearly 15,000 visitors from 89 countries. This  provides the perfect opportunity to network with fellow industry professionals - strengthen existing business partnerships and create profitable new leads.

FIRST KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANNOUNCED FOR NUCLEAR POWER EUROPE 2012

18 July 2011: Dr. Michael Suess, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Energy Sector and Member of the Managing Board Siemens AG, is the first confirmed speaker for the Opening Keynote session which will take place on 12 June at POWER-GEN Europe in Cologne.

PennWell's International Conference Director, Nigel Blackaby commented, "We are delighted that Dr. Suess has taken time out from his busy schedule to take part in the keynote session, which will set the tone for the event in Cologne next year."

POWER-GEN Europe 2011 Achieves Record Visitor Numbers

Fiera Milano City, Milan, June 9th, 2011 – The nineteenth POWER-GEN Europe Conference and Exhibition, co-located with Nuclear Power Europe and Renewable Energy World Europe, closed today having experienced a record number 14,917 attendees across the three events over three days..

Show highlights included opening keynote speeches from Gianfilippo Mancini, director of Enel’s Generation and Energy Management Division & Energy Management Division, Paul Browning president and CEO of GE Energy’s Thermal Products and Giuseppe Zampini CEO of Anslado Energia.  All three speakers provided a clear picture that the European power sector is changing and it is changing fast.

An excellent plenary panel debate hosted by leading international journalist and broadcaster Stephen Sackur, exploring whether the power industry can deliver on European policy targets, was another highpoint. The debate was streamed live on the internet allowing a global audience to participate, with questions coming from as far afield as Singapore, South Africa and Australia.

This year’s event has taken place against the backdrop of a highly fluid outlook for every sector in the power industry, as Stephen Sakur stated on the show’s video daily, “The plenary session highlighted a measure of potential uncertainty.  It’s where technology and politics overlap that you get the most interesting debate...There is a degree of uncertainty about the investment climate, about the political climate and how realistic the European energy targets are.”

Conference Director, Nigel Blackaby is delighted with the success of this year’s show, “The high number of attendees across all three events is a reflection of the industry’s eagerness to discover the latest developments in business, technology and policy at a moment of such rapid change for power generation. It’s an exciting time to be working in such an innovative industry and it has been great to see professionals from every sector of the power sector come together to discuss the challenges that they face and how they can work together to meet these.”

We bid Milan a fond "Arrivederci" and thank our exhibitors, visitors, delegates and speakers for their continued support of our events. For 2012 we are proud to say"Willkommen in Köln" when POWER-GEN Europe and its co-located events stage at the KoelnMesse, Cologne, Germany on 12 - 14 June 2012.

Nuclear Power Europe panel discusses the impact of Fukushima on the nuclear industry

Leading industry figures come together to look to the future

Fiera Milano City, Milan, 7th June, 2011 – Nuclear Power Europe, co-located with POWER-GEN Europe and Renewable Energy World Europe, today hosted a panel discussion on investment in nuclear power after Fukushima.  The panel was one of the first opportunities the industry has had to come together to debate its position and outlook in light of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant incident in Japan.  It was moderated by Steve Kidd of the World Nuclear Association and tackled head on the challenges the industry now faces in light of recent events.

Opinion was split between the eight panellists on what direction investment in the future of nuclear power should take. Professor Stephen Thomas of the University of Greenwich believes that it is far too early to predict the impact Fukushima will have on the nuclear industry, but felt that investment into the nuclear renaissance was failing before the Fukushima incident occurred. Conversely, Alessandro Clerici, of ABB Italia drew upon the shut down of Nuclear plants in Italy following Fukushima, stating that extreme political and public reactions have resulted in Fukushima having a more disastrous impact on the nuclear industry than Chernobyl incurred 25 years ago.

Allan Baker, global head of power of European financial services giant, Société Générale added that in light of Japan’s nuclear disaster, investment in the industry has become problematic. Financing a nuclear plant is not the problem, it is uncertainty in the industry. Many governments have halted subsidies for nuclear development and this uncertainty has prompted lenders to withdraw from nuclear investment.”

Malcolm Grimston, Associate Fellow (Nuclear Policy) of Britain's world-leading international affairs think-tank Chatham House was keen to point out that the safety of nuclear power plants is underestimated. Emphasising that every nuclear power incident is a special case. If you knew it could happen you would have protected yourself against it.

The panel debate is one of the highlights of Nuclear Power Europe’s incisive and high-quality programme, which includes speakers representing a broad spectrum of interests from across the industry. The conference and exhibition provides a forum for industry participants to address the major issues surrounding nuclear power, as it looks to its future role within the energy mix.
